Biodynamic light is hot & happening. The awareness of problems caused by our deregulated biological clock is growing. In 2017, for example, the Nobel Prize for Medicine went to three American geneticists who studied the functioning of our biological clock. In addition, the social discussion about the abolition of summer and winter time recently made the Dutch national news . So light is essential for people. But how do we ensure a healthy light balance in the workplace or in our homes?
This explanation is about bringing outdoor light indoors. Meaningful technology inspired by nature. Our motto 'life needs light' indicates that life on earth needs light, for plants, animals and certainly also humans.

Daylight outside is healthy for everyone
We as humans have lived in the outdoors for at least 4 million years. Those light conditions have become decisive for our internal body processes. This makes outdoor light a basic health-making 'must have' for everyone: young & old, healthy & unhealthy. We advise people to go outside more often. That fits with our natural need: in addition to scooping a breath, certainly also scooping a bright light. And, because we are indoors most of the day, it makes sense to experience more and more outdoor light... indoors!
Huge light differences between outdoors and indoors
The problem is that there is much less light inside. A factor 100 to 1,000 times less light. There is enough light inside to see, because our human eyes can adapt very well to low light levels. However, our human biological clock is living in darkness. Our biological clock is mostly not stimulated at all in indoor lighting conditions. Even if we work next to a window, at about 1,5 meters distance there's insufficient light. Often the sun is hidden behind the clouds, or the sun makes glare so the shades are down. The solution therefore needs to make much more light inside in a comfortable way in order to stimulate light sensitive cells in the retina of our eye. Extensive study of scientific research shows, we need a 1000 lux vertically on our human eye to trigger these cells during the morning till the afternoon.
Changing light contains information
In addition to the amount of light that hits our eye, there is another problem. Namely that indoors the regular light is monotone: the light is always the same in composition. Outdoor light gradually changes in composition throughout the day triggering our body and mind. In the photo on the right you see a sunrise, bluish bright sky and warm amber colored sunset as a curve. This curve is a combination of the amount and composition of light that changes gradually. We call this dynamic daylight. The bluish light makes us active, while the warm light relaxes us.
The solution in the below photo on the right shows that you can now simulate the dynamics of daylight. This simulation requires a computer that controls different LED groups depending on a time of day and season.
Our biological clock controls sleep & activity through hormones
In the photo on the left is the green nerve path goes to our brain's visual center, stimulated by our cones and rods. The third receptor in our eye, so-called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), are receptive to the amount and composition of light. Via a separate nerve path, shown here in blue, these ganglion cells can transmit signals to our biological clock (SNC). In our biological clock, it is determined on the basis of cell division whether our pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin or whether our pineal gland secretes the hormone cortisol. A well running biological clock needs timed light stimuli and as a result we will be more active during the day or, conversely, relax and sleep better at night.
The formula of healthy light requires serious technology
